Energy Checkmate: CHESS Energy-Efficiency Program Helps Members Win Savings

February 5th, 2026

By: Mitch Ross

As an electric cooperative member, you’re more than just a customer, you’re an owner. Your local co-op exists solely to serve you, with no higher priority than helping you achieve reliable, affordable power. If you’re dealing with high energy bills, uneven temperatures or general discomfort in your home, the smartest first step is to schedule a free energy audit through your co-op.

A professional energy audit is the foundation for identifying and resolving hidden inefficiencies. Many members also qualify for additional support through the Comprehensive Home Energy Saving Solutions (CHESS) Program or similar initiatives, designed to deliver meaningful, long-term savings.

The CHESS Program takes a thorough, whole-home approach to energy efficiency. A trained energy auditor conducts a detailed inspection, examining key areas such as the HVAC system, attic, crawlspace, ductwork and even everyday plug loads. They pinpoint common culprits behind energy waste and discomfort: air leaks, inadequate insulation, leaky ducts, outdated equipment and inefficient habits.

At the end of the audit, the auditor reviews their findings with you in plain language. You’ll receive personalized recommendations, including cost-effective upgrades, best practices for daily energy use and tips for forming efficient habits that add up over time.

When certain qualifying issues are identified, such as significant air infiltration or insufficient insulation, members may receive a follow-up visit from a professional weatherization crew. These improvements, which can include sealing leaks, adding insulation or repairing ducts, are typically provided at little to no cost to you. The co-op funds these services because lower energy use benefits everyone — reduced bills for members and more efficient operation of the cooperative system.

The results speak for themselves. An analysis of 152 CHESS participants revealed an average 10% reduction in energy consumption, translating to nearly $300 in annual savings per household. Impressively, 32 homes saved more than $500 in the year following their upgrades.

Energy bills are influenced by many factors — weather, appliance efficiency, home age and usage patterns among them. Sorting through these variables on your own can be overwhelming. A professional audit cuts through the complexity, providing clear, actionable insights tailored to your home.

If rising costs or inconsistent comfort are affecting your household, don’t wait. Contact Rich Mountain Electric at (479) 394-4140 today to learn more about scheduling a free energy audit, exploring the CHESS Program or discovering other assistance options available to members. We’re here to help you take control of your energy use.
